Born and raised in the wooded, rolling hills of the Eastern part of the country, I went to study at a university somewhere in the mountainous West. After five wonderful years as an undergraduate, I am entering a Ph.D. program located in a major Mid-Atlantic city. I have seen 23 winters thus far. I enjoy learning about all manner of extinct life, especially those belonging to the subphylum Vertebrata, and going out to collect their fossilized remains, as well as any sufficiently cool rocks that may be found along the way.
I have a weakness for books, both reading them and buying them, and am always on the lookout for more shelf space. My book interests range from ancient greek epics, through English and French romantic authors, 19th Century Russian novels, and sci-fi, to the technical paleontology literature. Dostoyevsky, Victor Hugo, J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton (what little I have read by him), Stephen J. Gould, Douglas Adams, Francis Schaeffer, Jules Verne, Arthur C. Clarke, C.S. Lewis, and Jane Austin are some of my favorite authors.
My favorite films include Jurassic Park, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Indiana Jones triolgy and the Star Wars trilogy. (I don't quite get the trilogy attraction myself, but it seems pervasive as I also like the Back to the Future films. But I guess that shouldn't be so mysterious. After all, DeLoreans are just cool.)
The largest defining feature of my life is the fact that I have been unable to shake the idea that Jesus of Nazareth was executed, buried and rose from the dead, along with all the necessary resultant conclusions. That being said, this affirmation does not necessarily dictate all of my actions, nor inform all my opinions (though I wish that it would do both). It is likely that some of the postings on this site may reflect poorly on the character of a follower of Jesus of Nazareth, please note that any such character weaknesses belong to myself alone and may not reflect the character of Christians in general, or the character I aspire to have.
I am an odd man, a young man, an old man, and I wear a fedora.
